A Big Finish

I finally finished my 100 blocks 100 days 2018 quilt. Bound, washed and dried, and photographed. This is such a big sense of accomplishment for me you guys. I bought Tula Pink's book  about 6 months after it came out because I saw it everywhere on the internet. And then, it sat on my shelf. I was completely overwhelmed with all the blocks in this book.

I mean, think of it. It's 100 different blocks. Each cut out separately. No fast rotary cutting multiples here. And I know that there have been other 100 blocks sew alongs, but finally, last year I was struck with a great desire to do this. I saw lots of great inspiration on Instagram. And I figured out a way to make this a bit less overwhelming. Every 10 blocks I made in a particular featured color. So much easier for me to decide on fabrics.

 I took the blocks with me to North Carolina last spring, and my daughter helped me to figure out a nice arrangement for them. That was another sticking point for me.

      And I loved what she came up with.

 I took a couple of pictures outside, but it was way too sunny for great colors.

 With all the color on the top, I decided to put on a border of grey to frame it. I quilted the quilt in off white thread, but did the borders in red thread, just for fun.

 And I had two long-ish pieces of leftover binding in my stash, so I put them together to bind this quilt.

And for the back, I used some Bonnie and Camille fabrics that I love, but had been in my stash for a number of years, along with a couple other fabrics to make it large enough.

A February Finish

So I saw a panel of Farm Fresh by Gingiber for Moda somewhere. I knew I had to get it. My oldest daughter loves chickens and I knew I could think of something to make her with the panel. And, since I was ordering the panel, I ordered some of the accompanying prints to match with it. I pulled a couple of fabrics from my stash and the result was this:

I made it with the idea that she could hang it on an open wall space in her kitchen. I thought it would really jazz up the space a bit.

 After I pieced it, I quilted it with red thread in a criss cross pattern across all the squares. I knew I wanted to do something different on the roosters and chickens, but what?

 My husband suggested chicken wire, to keep the birds in (ha) but how to do it? I ended up drawing the design on a piece of Sulky iron on stabilizer, ironing it on top of the birds and quilting with short stitches. Then I carefully removed all of the stabilizer just as you would for machine paper piecing. It worked like a dream, so I did them all that way.

 I loved the red gingham so I used it for the border. I don't very often put borders on my quilts anymore.

And for the back a found a piece of Bonnie and Camille's Vintage Picnic red bias gingham. I didn't have quite enough, so I just added some red and whit fabric I found in my stash.

 Add a label and I was done. I am so very pleased with this little wall hanging quilt.

And now that it is in my daughter's hands, I can share it on here with you. I have a couple of other projects using the pieces of this panel that I will share with you when I am finished with them. The panel also includes pigs and cows so I am making something up with them as well.

Detour

Have you ever been working on a project, or projects and you suddenly have to take a detour?

 I had finally gotten to the binding point on this quilt that I started a lifetime ago in North Carolina.

               And I had started working on a baby quilt for a friend's first baby.

And I was also working on a project for a baby shower as well. Not a quilt, but something else.

And then it happened. Another friend in need. Someone with an illness in need of comfort and support from as many people as possible. So this was born:

 I dug deep into my stash to find something not to flowery and girly. I found several pieces of Daysail by Bonnie and Camille that I had been sitting on, just waiting for the right quilt. Perfect.

 I pulled lots of coordinating fabrics. I had no idea exactly how big I was going for. I used Melissa's method for making flying geese. I love it because it is a no waste method and it is quick. I chose flying geese because I find the idea of soaring birds inspirational.

 I had it together in 4 days and on to quilting. I decided to do straight line quilting, but as I started, I was unsure of how many lines I would use.

 At my husband's suggestion, I used a navy blue Aurifil thread to quilt the lines. I liked it, as it went with all the fabrics, but something was missing. So I quilted a second line, very close, in teal or red, depending on the placement. That was what it needed. Glad I had so many colors of threads. The teal was 40 weight but the red and navy were 50 weight. I just went with it.

 I added a little flag to my signature tag, using some binding scraps that caught my eye. The binding is also from Daysail.

And now, less than a week and it is done. I will be taking it with me to NC this weekend to hand it off to a friend who will see that it reaches its intended recipient. And now, my heart is at ease for having this done and I can return to the path I was on before my detour.

Sunday Stash #33

So with all the holiday sales going on, I picked up a couple of things for my stash that I have really been wanting.

 This first is not for my stash. This is Tinseltown cars in red from Dear Stella. This is going to be the back of my Fair Isle quilt that I just made with Lee, from Freshly Pieced. She wrote this great pattern and if you start now, you can have one for next Christmas.

 This is a print from Kate Spain's Solstice. I am thinking of making another Christmas quilt and have been collecting favorite fabrics for it.

 These two prints are from April Showers by Bonnie and Camille. I couldn't not get a little something from this line. I love the raindrops and the umbrellas have such a vintage look.

And lastly, a couple of Carolyn Friedlander's Architexture line. I knew I would regret it if I never got some of these.  How about you? Hit any sales? Linking up with Sunday Stash.

Sunday Stash #31

See, still going with the alliteration. Gotta love it. I actually posted earlier this week (Post # 385 if you want to see) with some of my purchases, but these came in after that and I am still waiting on one more purchase that has been delayed. Let's see what we have today.

 First, I bought some new supplies. Two new rulers in sizes I have been wanting for a long time. The bigger one is 6 x 12 inches and the small one is a 5 x 5 inch square. My older 6 x 6 inch square is quite old and the corners not as sharp as they used to be. Also, some new hand work needles. All found on Amazon.

 Next, a Remix fabric charm pack I bought on Southern Fabric's Daily Deal. I just had to have these bright beauties. Two squares of each fabric are included here.

 The red here is one I have been wanting. It is from Amy Butler's Lotus collection. The yellow is Taza Ribbon Damask. A beautiful fabric, even if I do say so myself.

 The grey stripe here is also the Taza collection in Color Stripe Grey. The red is some Happy Go Lucky from Bonnie and Camille. I love this print and would love to get it in all colorways.

Sunday Stash #21

Well, I have been trying really hard to not buy fabric. And while I am not totally successful at that, I am buying more relevant fabrics at least. What I mean is, good blenders and colors my stash is lacking. A few pieces to finish a quilt or two. That kind of stuff. Here's what I have purchased recently:

 These are bricks of American Made Brand Solids. I joined a swap and we each bought and cut two colors. I am now the proud owner of all the colors. I threw them up on my design wall just to look at them.

 This is Wyndham Fabrics 8 Days a Week. I have been wanting some of this forever. I bought two yards of it, more than I typically buy, but it is one I think I will really use.

 You can barely see this, but it is a white on white chevron from Riley Blake Designs. I am getting ready to start the last two baby quilts (out of 5) and I needed more white. I am using white on white and some low volume for a section of these.

 And here again, a couple more blues for the above mentioned baby quilts. The blue with the light blue crowns is from Let's Pretend by Sara Jane. The fun plaid is by P & B Textiles.

 While noodling around on Etsy the other day I found some out of print Bliss, by Bonnie and Camille that was crying out to me. So I bought a yard. I find I always need more reds in my stash, so this baby will not sit too long I hope.

And the reason I was on Etsy to begin with was to order more labels for my quilts. I bought this big roll, which should last me quite a while, from Inked Papers Etsy shop.  Have a great Sunday. Linking up with Molli Sparkles for Sunday Stash.

My MSBHQAL Friday Finish

This is my second post today. I was in a blog hop with Madam Samm and all the creative ladies that hop on Sew We Quilt this morning, but I couldn't not post my Friday finish and link up with Crazy Mom Quilts. So here we go...and let me tell you these pictures are not the best. I had no one here to hold up the quilt and this is the only non rainy day I am going to get.

 She's a beauty! Thirty blocks and enough sashing and borders to make her fit my queen size bed.  I put one green block in each corner. There are some Pearl Bracelets in there and some Bonnie and Camille Vintage Modern.

 Since it is such a linear quilt, I wanted the quilting to have some curve to it. I chose an edge to edge pattern of flowers, leaves and berries.  It took me awhile to be able to afford to have this quilted, but it was worth the wait. I dropped it off on a Monday and it was ready by Thursday afternoon. I had to wait to pick it up on Monday, but I came right home and made the binding which I machine stitched.

I had this beauty on the bed for us to use that very night. My hubby loves it too. The top thread used is a shimmery celery green and a medium grey is on the back.

 I bound the edges in the same Kona Medium Grey that I used for the sashing and borders. I didn't want anything to drag your eye to the edge. This is already one busy quilt.

 I used a piece of Kona Ash to extend the back and appliqued 5 blocks made from scraps onto it.

Now all I have to do  is get my bedroom repainted to the pale grey I want so this quilt looks right at home. It really doesn't go with the blue walls.

 I have to say, this is one of my all time favorite quilts and I really want to make another, although smaller, one of these. Each block is a masterpiece.
