Science Fair Time

Finally, finally J's Science Fair quilt is done! I am so happy with how it turned out, and I cannot wait until next week to give it to him. They will be coming here for Thanksgiving and I am going to give it to him then. Yay!!

         So glad we got pictures yesterday. Today is dark and rainy out there.

The back, I love. In this picture, you can't tell what the largest area is, but it looks grey. But it's not.

                     It's this fabric.

 I put his initials in three of the spaces.

 I quilted 4 lines close together every 6 inches or so, both horizontally and vertically, and then did more curvy, round quilting inside those squares.

 There wasn't enough of the molecule fabric to bind with, so I mixed it up with some orange Kona, which I had in my stash.

I can't wait to see what my little science guy thinks of this!

WIP Wednesday

Wow...it's been a whole week since I've been here. Not that I haven't been busy and doing some sewing.  I have been bouncing back and forth between quilting J's quilt and piecing my Fair Isle quilt. Here is the proof:

 Here are the sections for the reindeer blocks for my Fair Isle quilt. All cut, clipped together and marked so they don't get mixed up.

 I know how easily things can get mixed up, so I marked the top left of each block with a safety pin so that I don't accidentally add a row to the wrong end as I build them.

 This is my favorite part of the binding step of a quilt. Seeing all that freshly pressed binding cascading off the end of the ironing board.

                And then rolled up around a clothes pin. I love the way this looks.

                      Prettiest fabric lollypop ever.

And here it is, ready and waiting for the binding. So happy the quilting is done. It took a long time. Linking up with Lee at freshly pieced for WIP Wednesday.

Science Fair Friday Finish

Finally, a finished quilt top. This quilt is not hard. The blocks are large. There are only 12 of them. But it took me forever to get them done and put together.

 I made the sashing strips 3 inches, instead of 2 1/2 inches. Same with the borders. I wanted the quilt  wee bit bigger so it would fit on J's bed better. I discovered how much I hate cutting and sewing the long sashing and border strips onto a quilt. Probably why I don't make many quilts like this anymore.

 But I do love the way it turned out. Now, on to basting and quilting. The goal is to have it done and ready to give to J when he comes for Thanksgiving!

WIP Wednesday

Fall is rushing by and I know there is some holiday sewing on the horizon, but not just yet. Here is what I am working on today:

 The binding is ready and soon will be attached to the quilt for my great niece V. I chose three colors from my stash that I think go with the quilt, since there is not enough left of the fabric I used in the quilt.

 Here is the quilt, quilted and ready to bind. It is made from a jelly roll of Hello Petal.

 I just had to get a yard of this cute fabric and now am pulling from my stash, fabrics to go with it for something. I can't decide, small quilt or pillow, but I love these bees!!

 And all the blocks are made for J's quilt now, so it is time to assemble the quilt top. There are twelve of these star blocks.

The white sashing and the print border are all cut and ready to go. So that is what I am working on today. Linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced. C'mon and join us.

Rainy Days and Mondays

On this dark rainy Monday, since I didn't have to go to work, I thought it would be a perfect day to sew. There is almost no place as cheering to me on a dark rainy day, as my sewing room. And I have a very cheerful project too.

 This is the beginnings of a new quilt for my grandson J. He is 7 and is very interested in science and all things scientific. He has a particular fascination with the periodic table. So when I saw this collection, Science Fair from Robert Kaufman, I knew it was "the one".

 Here is the first block. See what I mean? Perfect. The star points are all made with shades of Crosshatch Sketch by Timeless Treasures. I comes in a wealth of colors and goes so well everything.

 Here is the second block. I love all the beakers and test tubes. More shades of Crosshatch Sketch. I am sure this is going to be such a fun quilt to make and I just know J will love it.

And for me, a bit of crocheted comfort. Working on a blanket made with Blue Sky cotton yarn.  It is so soft. So how about you? What do you do on a rainy Monday?
