Friday Finish-Woody and Buzz, Together Again

This one has been a long time in the making. Lots of pictures folks, because I love them all and couldn't decide. Ready? Here we go:
This is V's quilt. It is Riley Blake's Rocket Age fabric line. A wonderful vintage looking fabric line.
Great colors and this is the first time I have put a border on a quilt in ages. I just had to use all those triangles though.

Here is a close up of some of the prints in this line. Very 50's looking I think.

This is a favorite one with the old time comic book advertising on it. I so remember these.
And a rich royal blue Kona solid for the back. No fabric should compete with the front of this one.
Quilted with swirls and stars, because it is out of this world, right? This was a quick job to quilt.
This is B's quilt, made from Riley Blake's Sasparilla line of fabrics. It is actually the one I started first, but finished last for some reason.

A couple of close ups of the great cowboy prints in this line. I also love the bandana prints that I used for the star points.

The third print was this alphabet print that looks like old time typeset.
A bright cheerful Kona solid yellow for the back, and the whole center section quilted in horse shoes. That was my daughter's idea.

Here they are together. These will go on their new bunk beds which will be coming soon.
One last shot of the whole quilt. This is a quilt that I designed myself and once I started on B's, I knew I had to find the right fabric to make one for V so the brothers could have similar quilts.
I love the secondary pattern that popped up once I put the whole top together. I have written a very basic pattern for this if anyone is interested. I am considering whether to sell the pattern, but I would need testers first.
And as for the title of this post, well, Toy Story of course. The cowboy and girl reminded me of Woody and Jessie and the spaceman fabric is of course representing Buzz. Thanks so much to Riley Blake for great fabrics. Linking up with Crazy Mom Quilts for Finish it Friday.

Sewjo Saturday-Twice as Nice

Well I have been pushing and pushing myself to finish these quilt tops. And today...they are done.
What held things up was all these little pieces that had to be sewn and then trimmed down and sewn again.
That made these, which I used as a border to enlarge the quilt on the sides. I am aiming for twin.

Here is the quilt top for V. The fabric line is Riley Blake's Rocket Age. The quilt design is my own.
I love the little diamond borders down each side. The backing of this will be a Kona solid blue so it won't detract from the busy design which is the star.
The next quilt top is the one that started the whole thing for me...B's quilt. When I saw the Sasparilla fabric line, I knew I wanted to make B a quilt for his first big boy bed.
He just turned 2, so it will be soon. I bought half yard cuts of my favorites, got out the graph paper and went to work. I quickly found I didn't have enough fabric, so I bought some more.
The quilt looks a bit more washed out here than it really is, but once it's quilted, It will be great. The back of this one will be a Kona solid yellow.
The boys share a room, so to have two quilts similar, but not identical seemed a good choice. I counted how many fabrics I used for B's quilt and when I saw Rocket Age, I picked out the same quantity of fabrics for V. This time I knew how much to buy the first time.
I am so happy with how these came out. Once I get them quilted, I will be back to show them off. Linking up with Kim for Sewjo Saturday.

WIP Wednesday-Rocket Age

I have had a very busy and productive week. I know it's only Wednesday, but I have a picnic quilt for a blog hop and two baby quilts quilted and bound and going round and round in the dryer right now. So with all that progress, it's time to go back to work on another quilt.  Remember this?
This is the quilt I am making for V from Riley Blake's Rocket Age fabric line. It is the same pattern as one I pieced for brother B from the Sasparilla line, also by Riley Blake. Lots of piecing in these quilts so it's taking awhile. I have to get myself psyched up for all this piecing. Here's where I stand:
The pale blue flying geese with the orange stars are all done. They are trimmed and pressed.
So I sat down at the machine today and I had the stack of dark blue geese with red stars to work on.

Stitching, stitching, stitching. This kind of mindless sewing is not too bad, but I need to put music on the iPod to get through it. Once I start putting together bigger chinks, I am more excited and can focus better.
I get it done fairly quickly by chain piecing and trying not to think about how many pieces there are.
And after 90 minutes this afternoon, between loads of laundry, I am to the trimming stage. Next, I will press all of them.
And progress is made in the Rocket Age! Linking up with Lee at Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

Getting Zen With It

The title of this post comes from a conversation with my Hubby this morning. I have to go to work at 1 on Saturdays and I always try to get an hour or two of sewing in before I go. I am in the home stretch of this quilt top:
I hope you're not tired of seeing this one yet, because not only am I almost done, I am making another one just like it in Rocket Age by Riley Blake Designs. Here's a look at that:

This is the yardage I bought, based on how much it has taken to make the Sasparilla quilt top.
And yesterday, in about 90 minutes, after installing a new blade in my rotary cutter so I could cut multiple layers at once, I had this.
All the pieces of the second quilt top are cut. This was not how the first one went. As I was figuring out the design, I cut a few, then sewed and then cut a few more. Now, I have the necessary pattern drawn out.
This is the whole stack for a quilt top. It doesn't look like enough, does it? Well anyway, back to Zen.
So I have lots and lots of HSTs to stitch together for the final border of the first quilt, even though I would really rather work with the newly cut fabrics.  So I put on some music and tried to find my Sewjo and become one with the fabric triangles.
Chain piecing

Trim to 4" squares

Half way there

Still to go
So, back to the machine to hopefully finish this part up. Sooooo close. Have a great Saturday. Linking up with Kim at My Go Go Life for Sewjo Saturday.

Sunday Stash #11

So this week wasn't as full with sewing as I would have liked. Lots of life got in the way, but then that happens to all of us. I was wondering what I would talk about with my Sunday Stash post this week since the only thing I got was 3 yards of Kona white that I bought last week on sale from Canton Village Quiltworks. Nice, sure, but doesn't make for the most exciting photos. Then I remembered that I had ordered some fabric for a quilt, so I went to the site and borrowed the pics to show you here.

These fabrics are all from the Rocket Age collection by October Afternoon for Riley Blake. I had to go to two different on line shops to get all of them. I found some at Hawthorne Threads and the rest I procured at Lemon Tree Fabrics.

My daughter requested that I make a quilt for V in the same pattern as B's quilt since the boys share a room. B's is the wonderful Sasparilla fabrics, also Riley Blake. She says that with cowboys on one and spaceships on the other it will be like Woody and Buzz. To infinity and beyond!
